Fans of Big East basketball will likely never forget the moment Dejuan Blair threw Hasheem Thabeet over his back in one of last year’s classic UConn-Pitt battles. (If that wasn’t a sign of who would be better in the NBA….). Tonight Pitt travels to UConn for the first match-up between the two powerhouse schools. This game definitely shows how parity can exist in college basketball, where last year the two games between these two schools often included little 1s and 2s next to their names, tons of ESPN hype, and several future NBA ballers. Yet this year, these two teams are incredibly different, trying to find their respective ways through a top-heavy Big East that includes neither (at the moment). Unfortunately, I have class during this game tonight and will not be able to watch the two battle once more, but the game should serve as a reminder that Number 1 rankings are never guaranteed in college basketball.
